Writing a general history of a conflict as huge as the Second World War is tricky: One wishes to cover the topic without becoming mired down in details. Colonel Boyne gives the listener a superbly researched and well-written introduction to sea conflicts of the war. The work progresses in a largely chronological format that is easy to follow, not from only a local perspective, but a global one, as well. Whitener's reading is a pleasure: clear, even-paced and precise. He also does a creditable job with foreign words--even those fearsome German ones. His voice exudes an easygoing confidence that goes well with non-academic histories such as these. This title complements Boyle's history of WWII air conflicts, THE CLASH OF WINGS.
