SEEK A NEW DAWN

In Thompson's three-hanky historical romance, a minister's plucky daughter hunts for her suitor, who has left the impoverished mines of 1870s Cornwall for the wilds of Australia, where he has vanished. While the characters and situations seem conventional, the author presents them in graceful, straightforward prose against a rich and convincing tapestry of period detail. British actor/singer Anne Dover has a lovely, dignified voice, which she uses to good advantage in narrative passages. Her considerable mimetic skill and facility with accents serve her well with dialogue. The overall feel is reminiscent of "Masterpiece Theater."
