The Durants usher us into the subtle intrigues of early eighteenth-century France, closely examining the artists and thinkers of that world. From there they take us on a tour of the political and cultural courts of the rest of Europe, concluding with close studies of Leibniz, Newton and Locke. A breathtaking journey through a watershed period in the history of ideas is made all the easier thanks to Alexander Adams's careful and intelligently nuanced reading. He is at once alert to the Durants' meaning, with its subtle touches of insight and humor. But more importantly in so long a work, he is appreciative of the beautifully balanced and graceful prose.
