Narrator Christopher Lane has quite a challenge on his hands--or vocal chords--as narrator of this audio collection of Mailer's works. First, there's the author himself, an icon of twentieth-century literature and culture. Then there are the essays, which represent some of Mailer's best work. Lane successfully meets these challenges, using his friendly, deep, somewhat nasally voice; excellent pacing; and precise diction to bring the master's words to life. Lane is not flashy, nor does he attempt character voices, relying instead on a steady reading that allows the words and meanings to shine through. There are times when his voice can be monotonous, but his consistency is a virtue over the course of this audiobook. R.I.G. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2017]
