In flashbacks Garcia captures the vicious Samuel Clevenger; his sickly wife, Charlotte; and daughter, Jessie, who sell everything to move further west. Johnson and Willson, who are hired to transport the Clevengers are duped and framed for murder. The story also includes an account of a horrifying life-and-death card game, which takes place in a jail, between Buffalo Soldier John Johnson and cowboy Frank Willson. Listeners will enjoy hearing the language of the day, authentic details such as a chuck wagon, and cowboy humor. The suspense continues up to the unfolding of the cleverest conclusion imaginable.
