WHAT HAPPENED ON PLANET KID

As Dawn spends the summer of 1958 with relatives on a Virginia farm, she tries to practice her curveball, think positively about her mother's illness, and play with her new friends, Charlotte and Delbert. At age 12 Dawn is confused about boys, her family, and the extreme physical "discipline" at Charlotte's house. Kate Forbes gives a capable performance of this finely crafted book. She brings out a wide range of emotions and is especially effective in the more suspenseful moments. Her narration gives Dawn a youthful yet articulate voice. J.M.P.
