Narrator David Thorpe meets the challenge of balancing the two main characters in this mystery: Detective Chief Inspector Dominic Jejune, a Canadian transplant who's distant and secretive, and his subordinate, Detective Inspector Danny Maik, a local whose kindness and openness don't keep him from success. Thorpe's lively descriptions of Norfolk's scenery and dazzling wild birds add atmosphere to this overly long mystery. When Jejune's brother, Damian--an international fugitive--descends upon him, Jejune is put in an untenable position. The brothers sound believably similar yet different. It's fascinating to hear the police trying to determine if several murders are related to international bird trafficking.
