DOLORES Seven Stories About Her

by | Read by Suzanne Toren

Children Ages 10+ • 2.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2002

Quirky, independent Dolores grows from a 7-year-old girl into a young woman in these vignettes, which focus on seven moments in her life. Despite some problematic relationships with others, she is close to her musician brother, who protects her and gives her the space to become herself. Because of her extraordinary intelligence and independence, Dolores is perceived to be aloof by some around her. Unfortunately, Suzanne Toren interprets this to mean distant. She narrates in a cold, almost smug, voice that fails to capture the character's underlying vulnerability and sensitivity. Still, this finely written story is not to be missed. Brooks offers an innovative way of looking at character; Dolores offers a fascinating new kind of role model for girls. E.S. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 03]
