SURVIVING CYRIL

Leah Casey convincingly narrates this contemporary retelling of CYRANO DE BERGERAC. When Robin Matheson's beloved husband, Travis, is killed in Afghanistan, she's left to raise their 4-year-old son, Seth. Through Casey, listeners will share every adjustment and sorrow of the new widow. A tiny bright spot is that Robin will no longer need to see Travis's best friend, reclusive, 500-pound computer nerd Cyril. Casey's Cyril is spot-on, showing little personality or emotion except with Seth. (Listeners will shed tears when Seth sweetly calls him "Cereal.") Casey's measured delivery keeps comments on complex issues such as war and technology from overwhelming a truly worthwhile story.
