Eccentric characters abound in the second installment of the fast-paced new series by authors Evanovich and Hughes. First, there’s a car that talks--simpering just like Marilyn Monroe. Then there’s Swamp Dog, a menacing thug, and Vera, an elderly secretary specializing in sarcasm. Local newspaper owner Jamie Swift and billionaire Max Holt form a Nick-and-Nora-Charles-type duo as Swift chases a story with political ramifications that bring threats and danger. Sexual chemistry between the two principals is sometimes searing, often comical, and always engaging. Lorelei King's exceptional character depiction makes up for occasional plateaus in suspense. Although this production contains street language, this is an excellent listen for a short commute. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 03]
