Nine Betts Lane, a dreary little place, is inhabited by Florence Preston and her family at the beginning of the twentieth century. After they move in, bad luck comes their way and seems to touch every person they know. Delivering De Lisle’s style of short sentences, Marie McCarthy reads each phrase with measured breaths and distinct stops, creating a choppy sense of storytelling.
