Mystery & Suspense • 10 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1990

Dibdin's Aurelio Zen is a masterful creation. Zen is in Sardinia trying to solve a nearly insoluble riddle when a wealthy eccentric is murdered. The murder is videotaped with the murderer's face shielded, and the number of suspects are legion. Narrator Barnes handles each unique character splendidly and believably. The highlight is his retelling of a nightmare that perfectly captures the violent and creepy world in which Zen finds himself. Barnes handles the melodious writing, along with the ever present irony, in perfect measure. An excellent listening experience for those who enjoy fine writing that is equally well presented.
