Siringo's tale of his adventures as an undercover operative with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency is fascinating. However, Murphey's reading is lack-luster; an award-winning singer and songwriter is not necessarily a dramatic, expressive reader. Murphey's voice is pleasant to listen to but adds nothing to the exciting events described by Siringo. Using his wits, rather than Sherlockian deductive reasoning, Siringo hunts moonshiners in Appalachia, chases the Wild Bunch throughout the Southwest, and survives labor riots in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. This abridgment is seamless and enjoyable enough to motivate listeners to read "the rest of the story." S.C.A. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: JAN 98]
