Narrator Phyllida Nash exuberantly creates this first (of 22) Miss Seeton mystery. Miss Seeton sounds realistic when her internal singing of an aria--after seeing CARMEN--is interrupted by witnessing a man assault a woman. Listeners will be impressed when she strikes the man with her ever-present umbrella but then concerned when he follows her to a remote cottage she's inherited. A dollop of village life keeps listeners engaged as Nash deftly conveys small-town eccentrics, gossip, and nosiness, with Vicar Arthur Treeves being her best creation. He innocently blabs Miss Seeton's whereabouts in a TV interview. However, the indomitable Miss Seeton ultimately outwits a murderer, juvenile delinquents, and drug dealers as she assists Scotland Yard.
