THE TRANSITION

Narrator Joe Gaminara keeps listeners right where the author wants them: teetering between perception and reality. When the façade of financial stability surrounding Karl and his wife, Genevieve, collapses, Karl is offered an alternative to criminal prosecution: Both he and his wife must go through "The Transition," a self-help style boot camp. He jumps at the chance but then becomes skeptical. Are Stuart and Janna, their mentors, trying to drive a wedge between him and Genevieve? Is the program some elaborate scam? Gaminara lets Karl descend into paranoia as Genevieve rises in self-assurance. Gaminara's credible performance of the seesawing of their personalities makes the final outcome that much more poignant.
