CRAZY HORSE

Larry McMurtry made the Wild West believable again with the Pulitzer-Prize-winning LONESOME DOVE (1985). Here he spends so much time telling us how little about Crazy Horse we know for sure that I found myself wondering, "why'd you choose him, then?" Ultimately both man and myth come through, along with an eloquent statement of the limitations of objective knowledge. Read beautifully by Eric Conger and with Native American music at the end of each side of each tape, the story tells of the Indian who helped kill Custer and then died himself, a Sioux Christ.
