This raw, compelling memoir makes for an outstanding audiobook, and the author’s narration is well done. The depth of her intelligence is immediately obvious, but what’s more riveting is her brutal honesty and her willingness to speak her truth—both beautiful and messy. The collection of essays covers a range of topics from Black history to pop culture, literature to current events, and "fast-tailed girls" to "Black girl magic." She is unflinchingly honest in her critique of feminism and not afraid to highlight ignorance and criticize those who claim to be advocates and activists yet refuse to truly see the reality of life as a young Black woman in the United States today.
