This audiobook's introduction gives some helpful insights into Rowland's mystery, written in 1938. Peter Wickham provides an entertaining narration, beginning with the voice of meek, small-statured Henry Fairhurst, who finds a dead man in the reading room at the British Museum. Wickham's wide range of character voices adds much interest and enjoyment to the story. Detective Shelley from Scotland Yard sounds authoritative and sometimes pompous as he sets about solving the murder with Henry's help. Wickham's female voices are high-pitched and comical, which fits with the story, and his male voices are varied in pitch and equally comical. What in writing would simply be a classic murder mystery becomes an enjoyable audio performance by Wickham. M.M.G. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2018]
