NATIVE DANCER The Grey Ghost: Hero of a Golden Age

by | Read by Jonathan Marosz

Contemporary Culture • 12 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2003

As moving as it is informative, NATIVE DANCER tells of an awe-inspiring horse, a sport at the peak of its popularity, and the advent of the television era. Running in the early '50s, the legendary horse called the Grey Ghost won all but one race. He was known for pulling out of the pack late, and for his playfulness, flair, and undying spirit. Told with humor, poignancy, and drama, the story is compelling, although its length may prove an impediment for some. One voice for so much text can't help but be occasionally monotonous, but Jonathan Marosz's expressive reading and varied pitch succeed in holding attention. Connoisseurs of horses, racing, and American popular culture will likely find every bit fascinating, while others might prefer to graze among the discs. E.S.
