A retired professor and dean from Yale, Kernan brings to life the details and events of military life from the mundane to the terrifying. Listening to Stoddard is like drifting into a local diner where the head of the local VFW is holding court, recalling his own war days. Stoddard's voice, which is remarkably similar to Lloyd Bridges's, connotes the authority and sagacity of an individual nearing the end of life and reflecting with care on earlier, wilder days.
