This German mystery takes place during the bombing of Dresden, near the end of WWII. Despite its horrific backdrop, narrator Alexander Cendese captures the story's warm and humane moments. Amid the tumult, Detective Inspector Max Heller is assigned to find a depraved killer of women. It's painful to hear about city's destruction, food shortages, desperate migrants, and brutal Nazis, who are becoming more ruthless as they realize defeat is near. Hearing Heller and his lovely wife's fears for their sons on the front line brings listeners right into the action. Cendese escalates the tension as rumors of the murderer, known as "Fright Man," grip the city. The conclusion is satisfying as listeners root for the old-fashioned, mannerly Heller.
