Dara Rosenberg narrates this contemporary romance featuring Erin, an unemployed middle school teacher, and Jake, her brother's childhood friend and co-worker at the local fire department. Longing to return to sunny San Francisco, Erin is spending her summer looking for a new teaching job back in California, helping her mother recover from surgery, and moping around her cloudy hometown of Portland, Oregon. Though the novel is set in the Pacific Northwest, the characters frequently sound as if they would be more at home in the opposite corner of the country. Both the fluctuating speed of the narration and some unusual pronunciations add little to the story and fail to ignite the listener's imagination.
