This is the story of Perys Tremayne, a terribly nice young Cornishman who loses his heart to flying and to a beautiful farm girl during WWI. Thompson gives us an interesting perspective on the early days military flying. Even the Red Baron makes a cameo appearance. The story is hopelessly romantic and the protagonists far too noble, but the plot has twists and turns, and the aerial combat scenes are compelling. Actor Terry Wale does a fine job portraying British officers and gives other passable portrayals, but his low, gravelly voice is sometimes hard to understand for American listeners. It’s worth listening to gain an appreciation of a time and place that are long gone and may never have really existed. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 03]
