Julius Lester makes another case for himself as the true voice of Uncle Remus in this collection of tales about Brer Rabbit and his contemporaries. Lester's reading is delightful. He understands comedy: when to take a pause, when to crescendo, when to tone it down. Through his written and spoken words, he makes Uncle Remus as much a character as Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Miz Cricket. Sadly, this reading is hampered by poor sound quality. The production sounds muffled and has a fair amount of background noise, which makes it difficult to listen in the car or less than quiet conditions. Still, families will find it's worth going to a little trouble to listen to these stories, which deliver wisdom and humor in equal measure. A.F.
