CLASSICS OF AMERICAN LITERATURE

by | Read by Arnold Weinstein

Contemporary Culture • 42 hrs. • Audio Program • © 1998

Arnold Weinstein's lectures on American literature are ideal. Beginning with Ben Franklin and moving through Toni Morrison, Weinstein discusses the major works by each author, puts him or her in cultural context, and guides listeners through readings informed by deep scholarship and contemporary literary theory. Lest that description seem daunting, one needs to note that Weinstein lectures exceptionally well, integrating personal opinions and gentle humor, allowing long pauses for understanding, and reading poems with a performer's understanding of their cadence. His enthusiasm is clearly that of one who loves his subject. All libraries will want a copy, as will anyone with an interest in American literature. G.T.B.
