Custer--the mere mention of this name brings a sneer to most folks' faces these days, and he was just as controversial in his own lifetime. Wert's biography does much to give us the man. We see his many virtues and vices, and learning of his very successful Civil War service gives us some perspective on the man. Estell's reading is up to his normal high standard. Indeed, it's hard to hear a work concerning the Civil War era and not hear his voice--clear, consistent and controlled.
