MYSTERIUM

MYSTERIUM is an audiobook about adventure, loss, and redemption. Place those topics against the backdrop of an imposingly tall mountain and put a mismatched team of human beings on the side of said peak, and one would expect a dazzling performance. While Neil Shah is certainly a consistent narrator, this performance is too regulated, too measured, for such a story. One's mind knows that a lively tale is being shared, but one's ear hears only Shah's careful, slow cadence, and the exhilaration of the story is tamped down. The audiobook is certainly one that could engage an avid listener--after all, the story is engaging, and Shah's voice is pleasant--but one should expect a slow journey to the top.
