Kate is asked to do a seemingly impossible task: save her dying hometown. Narrator Emily Durante projects Kate's confidence and efficiency in this first-person mystery. When Kate visits the Victorian-era Barton House, Asheboro's only significant asset, Durante captures Kate's fear and resilience as she discovers the murdered body of her high school enemy, who had been trying to take over the house for her own use. In particular, Durante effectively portrays Kate's childhood best friend, Lisbeth, who reacts with high emotion to every situation. In contrast, Durante provides a suitably restrained portrayal of the repressed librarian, Audrey. V.M.G. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2018]
