Newly promoted Detective Inspector Kay Hunter and her engaging staff are convincingly portrayed by narrator Alison Campbell. Residents of the bucolic Kent countryside are aghast when a shoe containing a severed foot is found by bicyclists. This old-fashioned--in a good way--mystery is faultlessly rendered; listeners can almost see the team as they tackle the atrocity. Campbell gives the relatable Hunter an appealing personality, especially as she questions victims and suspects. Hunter's husband, a veterinarian, adds warmth and humanity when he brings home a goat to foster. Overall, Campbell admirably meets the challenges of the story's resort setting and large cast, in particular Hunter and her close-knit team.
