McPherson's professorial tone and wide knowledge of the Battle of Gettysburg serve him well as the reader of his own work. His pace is not overwhelmed by his enthusiasm for the topic. As he recounts specific battle episodes and provides background information on events leading up to those situations, the listener is drawn into a complex lecture on American history. McPherson speaks clearly and uses his voice effectively to convey the historical importance of Gettysburg, as well as a sense of place. This recording is an excellent introduction to the background and events of this battle. McPherson's insights would also be of interest to Civil War buffs already familiar with the battleground. R.F.
