Princess Marie sacrifices herself to the evil Bird of Darkness; when Soliday hears this, he vows to rescue her. But it is his cowardly twin who rescues the princess, leaving Soliday to perish. Robin Miles brings a jaunty Caribbean tone to the story, while giving each character a distinct voice made unique by tone and personality traits. Miles uses her pacing and tone to build the tension in a story in which you know (or hope you know) what will happen. A good folktale, with a hint of violence, for younger readers also contains multiple layers for older readers. However, a good picture book without the pictures loses something.
