Butler disappears into the characters, subtly revealing personal secrets as well as secrets buried in the town's past. Even when the dialogue is stilted and adolescent, Butler makes it seem real. In fact, he is so convincing that it's almost possible to overlook the incredible coincidences, overblown prose, repetitious plot, and sex scenes meant to sizzle that fizzle instead.
