Listeners will need to tune their ears to eighteenth-century speech as they hear the travails of Oliver Cromwell Pitts, a 12-year-old convict, as his journeys take him from England to America. In Avi's second Oliver tale, hardship greets the young hero at every turn--from the harrowing sea crossing to the specter of seven years of indentured servitude on a tobacco farm to life in the swamp and the quest to locate his sister, Charity. As Oliver, Langton narrates at a steady pace, moving briskly from harrowing drama to description and back again. To Oliver's workmate, the enslaved boy Bara, Langton brings the voice of experience tempered with compassion. His sea captain and plantation master are consistently gruff and hard-bitten.
