Neil Slater is trying to make a new life for himself as a games master at a posh boys school after burning out on espionage at the SAS. However, after the attempted kidnapping of one of his students costs him his job, Slater finds himself lured back into the world of counterterrorism. Nonstop excitement is captured in the performance of Gordon Griffin, who reads with satisfying clarity and excellent diction. There's lots of blood and guts, love and sex to accompany the action, and Griffin successfully captures the nuances of plot and characters. The listener will have to figure out some of the British pronunciations, and the intricacies of the plot are also challenging since one cannot keep flipping back to review what's going on. This complexity is further complicated by having to keep track of a long list of characters, most with foreign names. Griffin's outstanding performance might have to be listened to twice to "get it," unless one has read the print version. S.S.R.
