MAIGRET: A MAN'S HEAD

Initially, it's a little jarring to hear Parisian cops, citizens, and criminals rendered in Oxford and Cockney accents, but once that becomes comfortable, the Gallic flavor of A MAN'S HEAD comes through satisfyingly. Stylish and sophisticated in execution and production, this BBC Radio drama is smooth entertainment by professionals who make it sound easy. In Paris police detective Inspector Maigret, one sees elements of TV's Columbo and the great Sherlock Holmes. Mystery, crime, and radio theater fans will find this recording a fine escape. D.J.B.
