Kate Reading and Johnny Heller narrate Elizabeth McCracken's 1993 collection of stories. Their eccentric, outsider protagonists are seeking, awkwardly, to connect with those around them. For her part, Reading offers a deep-voiced, mature-sounding narration at a comfortable pace. Though vocally varied, however, Reading's delivery lacks the whimsy that one would expect in conveying these offbeat stories. Heller's narration, on the other hand, projects a bit more whimsy and personality than one imagines McCracken had in mind. However, his slightly raspy and twangy voicing befits the rumpled characters. S.E.G. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2019]
