Narrator Simon Prebble treats listeners to a fun pulpy ride through this fifth entry in George Mann's steampunk detective series. In 1902, Veronica Hobbes, sidekick to Gentleman Investigator for the Crown Sir Maurice Newbury, aids London police in the investigation of a diseased-ridden corpse. In 1903, Veronica is deathly ill, and Newbury boards a train bound for St. Petersburg to claim a special item that could fix her failing heart. Also onboard are Veronica's sister, Amelia, and someone seeking revenge against Newbury. Prebble gleefully devours every word and provides irresistible forward momentum. His character voices and various accents are equally enjoyable. Previous knowledge of Mann's series is probably ideal, but first-time listeners can still appreciate this audiobook as a stand-alone story.
