Based on letters between George Sand and Gustave Flaubert, Bryant's play provides vivid portraits of these nineteenth century writers. Revealing fears, hopes, fiery opinions and compassion for each other and others, the dialogue is beautifully orchestrated. Hardly as dry as a printed exchange might be, the program breathes life and vitality. Grantham and Oliver take on their roles with lively enthusiasm and perfect timing. With deft skill their alternating voices bring Sand and Flaubert to life. The program should entrance enthusiasts and provide a compelling introduction for others including students.
