Once again, Simon Vance is in the wheelhouse with another strong performance of an expansive novel. Kay's fantasy seems less concerned with creating new worlds and more concerned with adding elements of freedom and imagination to whispers of history. The result is an engrossing tale full of drama and intrigue. Vance's voice is regal and enthusiastic, leaping into the spirit of the pseudo-Mediterranean world with verve. His dialogue is especially strong with male voices-- the females voices are less natural and stand out as a result. The substantial number of cast members can be difficult to sort out at times, and the inconsistent pace can create some confusion, but the willing listener can find much to enjoy in this literary escape.
