Susannah Jones is so earnest narrating this audiobook that listeners will grip their armchairs (or steering wheels) until their muscles ache. Sgt. Charlie McCabe returns home from Army duty in Afghanistan, where she disarmed explosives. She finds that her gambling father is being threatened by loan sharks and her new job as a bodyguard is as dangerous as the one she just left. Listeners get sucked into the lives of McCabe, her ne'er-do-well father, her fellow security agents, and even the dime-store criminals threatening her father. At stake are several lives and a mysterious bag of diamonds missing for decades. Jones makes it easy to create images in your mind as McCabe tries to save her first client from death, perhaps a death he deserves, and come up with a way to save her father, as well.
