DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS

Devil in a Blue Dress, set in Los Angeles in 1948, is Mosley's first Ezekial "Easy" Rawlins mystery. Paul Winfield's rich baritone easily distinguishes black and white, male and female, young and old, good and bad. Winfield masters the gruff and scratchy tones of the bartender, the tight squeaky Mouse, and both soft-spoken and street-smart women. Mosley has said the subtext of this novel is the "jazz language." The use of jazz interludes is a valuable addition to the listening experience. Easy is a kind of "everyman," and Winfield gives voice to all the colors of human life.
