Narrator Jenny Sterlin's slightly formal air and light British accent lend atmosphere and veracity to this fantasy set in the nineteenth century. When Kate and her younger sister, Emily, are orphaned, they are sent to live with distant relatives. Sterlin's narration weaves a sense of menace as Kate begins to realize that goblins roam their new hills and that their king is pursuing her. Surrounded by people who refuse to believe she is in danger, Kate struggles until her sister's disappearance forces her to look for help in the least likely of places. Sterlin brings energy to this lengthy story full of twists and turns. She ably conveys Kate's strength of character and is charming as the guileless Emily.
