This program explores a fascinating and complex period of European and Middle Eastern history. Professor Harl knows the material AND the region; his well-organized lectures cover enormous amounts of territory. But listeners should have patience; he speaks quickly, often mixing up words or putting as many as six "uhs" into a single sentence. He always mispronounces some words ("sepulchre" as "seplica"). But over the long haul, his delivery becomes engaging, and one appreciates his energy and expertise, despite the flaws. The accompanying booklets, with lecture outlines, glossary, bibliography, name list, and maps, are a valuable aid. Learning can be addictive; the listener will regret the program's end. W.M.
