During the Crimean War, when soldiers still fought in straight lines and military leaders came from the aristocratic ranks regardless combat experience, Sgt. Jack Crossman (hiding from his aristocratic and educated background) and his band of misfit soldiers are selected for covert operations that mean the difference between winning and losing. Garrett interweaves the actions and temperaments of these men with accents, emotions and personalities. Douglas's vivid descriptions of war are illuminated by the polished tones of Garrett, leaving the listener yearning to be a part of the adventures.
