A DIVERSITY OF CREATURES

BD Wong’s narration of Kipling’s somber, passionate stories and poems, which share the theme of the Englishman in wartime, is as stunning as the literature itself. His repertoire of vocal characterizations is as diverse as a company of actors, and he uses it to create character portraits, such as the ethereal children in “Swept and Garnished” and Mary in “Mary Postgate.” With judicious changes in volume, including a whisper at the conclusion of “The Fabulists,” Wong creates suspense and intensity. Throughout the collection, intelligent narrative pacing demonstrates Wong’s connection to the literature and highlights Kipling’s striking language. Anyone who enjoys great literature will be moved.
