Narrator Eilidh Beaton's clipped British accent is a good match for the Cambridge professor at the heart of this classic stand-alone mystery. On a stormy evening, as Rose settles into a holiday cottage on a remote Hebridean island, she is visited, first by one and then by another young man. Both are charming, but neither seems to be telling the truth about why he's out in such bad weather. Beaton's performance highlights Rose's spunky personality and inquisitive mind, keeping listeners engaged as the professor decides which of the men to trust and discovers why each showed up at her cottage. Through thoughtful pacing, Beaton allows listeners to absorb the descriptions of the beautiful Hebridean landscape, and her varied accents distinguish the islanders from the British vacationers.
