Moscow mobsters, illegal dogfights, corrupt cops and the disappearance of a Russian politician provide a fascinating backdrop for Kaminsky's latest police thriller featuring Porfiry Rostnikov. This no-frills reading by Alan Sklar shows us the sinister underbelly of post-Soviet Russia. Sklar's pronunciation of Russian names is believable, and his vocal characterizations are effective. But his steady narrative voice--together with the flat style Kaminsky uses when writing this series--renders this risky company for long car rides.
