The late Stephen Ambrose proves again that history need not be boring or impersonal. The experiences of individual soldiers are woven into an overarching account of the European theatre of WWII, from Normandy to the surrender of Germany. From the terrifying perspective of the foxhole, Ambrose presents the horrors of war, as well as the intense determination and grim satisfaction of men fighting for their country. Well suited to this genre, George Wilson brings a touch of personality to his narration while respecting Ambrose's journalistic style.
