WOLFE ISLAND

The controlled voice and convincing accent of narrator Abbe Holmes immerse listeners in the precarious existence of a woman who lives alone on a sinking island in Chesapeake Bay in a dismal but all too plausible future. Kitty's life is disturbed not only by rising waters but also by the arrival of her granddaughter and her Hispanic companions who need a sanctuary. In this dystopian novel, refugees are fair game for militia groups who enjoy attacking those who are "different." The writing is poetic, atmospheric, and at times gripping. Holmes ensures that every listener hears the lapping of the water, the echoes of gunshots, and the cries of a terrified child. They all make one feel a part of this believable new world.
