With her lovely voice and cultivated British accent, you feel you could listen to Gerri Halligan forever. Halligan so fully embodies Heyman's seventeenth-century heroine that it sometimes surprises you to find yourself surrounded by modern conveniences. The novel, reminiscent of LORD OF THE FLIES, follows a young Dutch woman, Judith Bastiaansz, who accompanies her family on a voyage to a new life in Australia. But when crew and passengers are shipwrecked on a deserted tropical island, all are confronted by new norms of behavior, power, complicity, and desire.
